Chelsea are considering a move to sign Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic whose contract situation might force the Italian club to cash in on him in January, according to the Mirror.
The Blues have recently recalled Kenedy, whom Thomas Tuchel considers as a potential wing-back option amid Ben Chilwell’s long-term absence.
Tuchel was very clear, though, that Kenedy’s possible inclusion is far from being the solution.
Bringing in a more experienced left wing-back who could really compete for the spot with Marcos Alonso would certainly make more sense given the circumstance.
However, it seems unlikely that Chelsea would want to make another big investment in this position after spending a reported £50million fee (Sky Sports) on Chilwell in summer 2020.
The 32-year-old’s contract with Inter expires at the end of this season and so far the two parties have yet to reach an agreement over a new deal.
A report from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests the reigning Serie A champions are still trying to convince the Croatia international to sign a new two-year deal on lower wages which Perisic is not very happy with.
The contract stalemate could lead to Inter’s being open to selling him in January rather than losing him for free at the end of the season.
Chelsea, according to the Mirror, are “weighing up a bid”.
Chelsea rarely target these veterans in recent years, but Thiago Silva has proved that bringing in an older player can work wonderfully.
Still, it is hard to imagine that Chelsea would offer Perisic, who has four goals and an assist in Serie A this season, a longer contract than what Inter are reportedly offering him.
Signing a player on a short loan, for example, Barcelona’s Sergino Dest who is also reportedly under Chelsea’s radar, would arguably pose less risk for Chelsea.
Although, it is easy to see why Thomas Tuchel would want Perisic, who is already familiar with a three-man defence system, as the report suggests.
