Olivier Giroud Claims Timo Werner Plays Effective When He’s Alongside Mason Mount And  Kai Havertz

AC Milan striker Giroud, 35, spent three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge as a Chelsea player before leaving in the summer. He’s given an insight into what it’s like playing with some of the current Blues squad.

Giroud has highlighted the quality of 25-year-old attacker Werner, who he feels can go under the radar with the quality he brings on the pitch.

He suggests that Werner thrives when playing next to Chelsea teammate and England star Mount. In addition, he can see a strong link with his fellow Germany international Havertz.

“I think Timo is a great striker and he played a huge part in our success last year,” Giroud told The Athletic.

“The problem is people look too much at the statistics when you’re a striker, and if you’re not scoring enough goals, they will always make comments about your game and stuff like that.

“I know he didn’t score so many goals but, in the Tuchel philosophy, he was huge — so important. He runs all day long and he really, really complemented Kai Havertz and Mason Mount.”

Chelsea Training Session And Press Conference

Of course, Chelsea’s summer signing Romelu Lukaku is going to start matches as the leading centre-forward when fit.

However, manager Thomas Tuchel is definitely still trying to work out his best combination to complete the attack.

Mount and Werner provide so much energy if they start as inverted wingers behind him. However, the likes of Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi want to start in the forward positions, too.

The Blues can run opponents into the ground if they have Mount and Werner as pressing machines in the final third of the pitch. They are both fan favourites that always give 100 per cent effort.

Werner was an important part of a Chelsea team that won the Champions League during his debut season last year, something which nobody can ever take away from him.

However, it feels like there is still so much more he can give.

He’s been linked with Premier League rivals Newcastle United recently, rumours that some Chelsea fans have laughed off.

The attacker needs to now try find some consistency under Tuchel and partnerships on the pitch will help, so it’s interesting to see Giroud highlight the one with Mount.
