Man United Still Leading Trippier Race Despite Arsenal Interest

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s interest in Kieran Trippier this summer has been well documented. It seems as though the Baby Faced Assassin is looking to provide some stiff competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in that right-back slot.

Recently, all has gone pretty quiet on the Trippier front, until today. The Telegraph have the latest on that front, as they claim Arsenal are now interested in signing the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man.

That said, it’s written United are still leading the race to sign the 30-year-old full-back, who won La Liga with Atletico Madrid in 2020/21.

Understandably, Diego Simeone is keen to keep a key member of his squad at his club for the title defence, placing a huge fee of £51m on Trippier’s head.

That price-tag could prove to be the stumbling block for both United and Arsenal, particularly when Trippier would be available as a free agent next summer.

This move would have undoubtedly been a shrewd one for United, though there’s no way United are breaking the bank for a player who is now on the wrong side of 30.

Trippier would provide something different to Wan-Bissaka, with the former far more offensive than United’s current first-choice right-sided defender.

For now, it looks as though Solskjaer is going to leave it as it is, giving Diogo Dalot a chance to challenge Wan-Bissaka for that starting berth.

If the Portugal international takes that opportunity, there may be no need to reignite interest in Trippier next summer. Should Dalot struggle, however, there’s every chance United look at signing the Bury-born Trippier on a free in twelve months’ time.
