Harry Kane Discusses Failed Man City Transfer For First Time

Manchester City wanted Harry Kane in summer, and Harry Kane wanted Manchester City, but Tottenham wouldn’t sell

Harry Kane believes he has dealt well with the one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer when Manchester City tried to sign him from Tottenham.

Pep Guardiola wanted a striker to replace Sergio Aguero, with confidence from the club’s chairman that they would do just that, and the Blues honed in on Kane as their top target after Dortmund made it clear Erling Haaland was out of reach.

However, despite Kane’s wish to leave north London, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy held his ground and refused to negotiate with City to rule out the chance of a deal.

Kane is not the only England international to have struggled on the back of the delayed Euro 2020, but his loss of form has been marked; last year’s Golden Boot winner with 23 goals has just one in 10 appearances this term, albeit in a Spurs side so poor that new manager Nuno Espirito Santo has already been sacked and replaced with Antonio Conte.

Ahead of England games with Albania and San Marino, Kane spoke about being the subject of intense interest and speculation for the first time.

“Obviously there was a lot of talk and speculation over the summer, the first real time that has probably happened to me in my career, but that is part and parcel of learning and being a big player having to deal with those situations,” he said.

“I think I dealt with it well and now it’s just about focusing. There’s still a long way to go at club level and now for me it’s just about finishing these two games strongly with England.”

City’s hopes of landing Kane have not been killed off completely, although there are no guarantees they will return for him next summer – especially when Haaland is expected to be available.

The 28-year-old accepts that he has not been scoring the goals that are expected of him, but still believes that he will find his touch again in front of goal as he looks to spearhead the attack for club and country.

“From my point of view, it’s easy for people to try and look for an excuse when you’re maybe not in form or scoring as many as you usually do and that’s where it’s important for my own self-belief and mentality just to work harder,” he said.

“That’s always been my approach, whether I’m doing really well or the goals aren’t quite coming, it’s just to train hard and work hard for the team and that’s what I’ve done my whole career.”
