Fabrizio Romano Revealed That Chelsea Are Pretty Convinced Cesar Azpilicueta Will Sign A New Deal

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Romano explained the Blues’ positive outlook in regards to their captain.

Azpilicueta will become a free agent next summer when his Stamford Bridge contract expires unless the club’s hierarchy can negotiate fresh terms.

Hands off Azpi

Barcelona are said to be very interested in the defender’s possible departure, as Xavi continues to rebuild the team from its ruins.

The Spanish side are targeting players who will cost nothing – apart from wages – due to their sticky financial situation.

Whilst Romano confirmed Barca’s intrigue in Azpilicueta, he also stated that they might struggle to prize the skipper from South West London.

“Barcelona will go for this kind of market. I sense they will go for this type of player in June, free agents,” said the transfer guru.

“Azpilicueta, from what I’ve told, Chelsea are so confident to extend his contract. This is for Azpilicueta and also for Thiago Silva.”

Along with Azpilicueta, Chelsea are facing the prospect of losing three other crucial figures from their backline at the end of the season.

As mentioned by Romano, Thiago Silva is another who has entered into the final stages of his contract.

However, the Blues are apparently planning on opening talks with the 37-year-old over elongating his stay.

Less encouragingly, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen’s future remain in the dark.

Both centre-halves are yet to reach a conclusion with Chelsea over – in Rudiger’s case – a salary increase, or – for Christensen – meeting agent demands.

It is highly likely one of these two will wave farewell to Thomas Tuchel’s squad next year.

At this rate, our bets are sadly on Rudiger.
