England Give Cole Palmer Injury Update To Man City As Injury List Grows

Manchester City forward Cole Palmer played for England under-21s in their Euro 2023 qualifying win over Czech Republic, but picked up a concerning injury.

Manchester City might have picked up a new injury concern after Cole Palmer hobbled off for England Under-21s on Thursday night.

Palmer, 19, started for England at Turf Moor having become a regular fixture for City’s first team squad, making seven senior appearances this season — scoring twice.

The forward played off the right for the Young Lions in his fourth cap at U21 level, and was involved throughout as they raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half.

The Czechs pulled a goal back before half time from the spot, but England held out comfortably to get their U21 Euro 2023 qualifying campaign back on track.

However, Palmer was replaced on 73 minutes as he limped off with an injury that appeared to be a muscle issue in his right hamstring.

After the game, U21 boss Lee Carsley said the substitution was a precaution and that England would assess Palmer’s condition ahead of their friendly in Georgia on Tuesday.

Carsley said: “Cole is fine, there’s a bit of stiffness in his hamstring so we’ll monitor him and make sure he’s well looked after.

“We’ll get the medics to assess and we’ll do what’s right for Cole and Manchester City. Going to Georgia, it’s one of the host countries [for Euro 2023] so it’s important to use the game to look at as many players as we can.”

Taylor Harwood-Bellis played 90 minutes in the win, while Tommy Doyle was an unused substitute.

Palmer went down in the second half holding his hamstring and had to be substituted.

Palmer’s injury hands City another worry after Bernardo Silva missed Portugal’s goalless draw with Ireland with muscle problems of his own, although his country hope he can return for a now-crucial final qualifier against Serbia on Sunday. Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo were both named on the bench in Dublin.

Elsewhere, Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring in Germany’s 9-0 demolition of Liechtenstein, who had a player sent off just nine minutes in, while Rodri and Aymeric Laporte were involved in Spain’s useful 1-0 win in Greece to boost their chances of qualifying for the World Cup automatically.

Jack Grealish has been declared ready to play for England tonight against Albania having missed training this week. Gareth Southgate said: “He’s had some illness, he did miss training, he trained this morning [Thursday] with the rest of the group. He’s available for the game and he’s ready is required.”
