Barcelona Make Innovative Contract Offer For 24-Year-Old Star Xavi Keen On Renewal

Barcelona are continuing their efforts to tie down Ousmane Dembele to a new contract at Camp Nou. The 24-year-old is in the final year of his deal and is yet to pen an extension with talks still ongoing.

Newly-appointed manager Xavi Hernandez explained at his presentation that he sees the Frenchman as a key part of his plans, adding that his contract renewal was a priority for the club.

With January nearing, Dembele will be allowed to hold talks with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement for a summer transfer. Barcelona are keen on avoiding such a situation, having lost Lionel Messi on a free transfer earlier this year and intend to reach a resolution at the earliest.

However, the 2018 FIFA World Cup’s injury record remains a cause of concern for the club, while the delicate financial situation is also making things difficult. As a result, the Catalans have come up with an innovative solution to keep hold of the former Borussia Dortmund winger, claims SPORT.

As per the report, Barca will offer Dembele a new contract with lower fixed pay than what he currently earns. However, the Catalan giants will include bonus clauses in the deal with relation to his number of appearances, which will increase his total salary, provided he keeps himself fit and plays regularly.

Sporting director Mateu Alemany has executed these kinds of deals at his previous clubs, Valencia and Mallorca. In essence, the contract would be segmented to include a bonus payment for every instance Dembele completes a target number of appearances.

These bonuses, along with the collective add-ons that are offered generally to the rest of the squad, and his fixed pay could take the Frenchman’s total package to a higher value than his current one. However, the key will be for him to stay fit and feature regularly.

The ball lies in the ex-Rennes prodigy’s court now. While he has informed his agents of his desire to continue at Camp Nou, it remains to be seen whether if he finds such a proposal from Barca acceptable.

In case things do not work out, the Catalans are willing to extend his contract by another year as an emergency measure to safeguard themselves while continuing talks over a long-term deal. For now, Dembele’s contract renewal is seen as an utmost priority.
