Barcelona Were Heavily Linked With A Move For Valencia Left-Back Jose Gaya During The Summer Transfer Window

With the Catalans having sold Junior Firpo to Leeds United and Jordi Alba not getting any younger, there was a need for a new left-back at Camp Nou

Gaya, to that end, had been identified as a primary target to come in and eventually take over from Alba as the first-choice left-back.

A move, however, did not materialise, leaving Barca to make do with Alba and a teenage Alejandro Balde as the only options in the position. But, with there being question marks over the future of the former uncertain amid links to Paris Saint-Germain, the Blaugrana will need to revisit their search for a new left-back in the near future.

Gaya’s name, unsurprisingly, continues to do the rounds as a potential target. And the Spanish international has addressed the speculations of a potential move to Camp Nou while speaking in an interview on Onda Cero’s Radioestadio Noche.

“I know about Barcelona’s interest in me from what has come out in the media but no one told me anything today. I am very happy here in Valencia, which is my home,” the Valencia captain said.

The 26-year-old will be entering the final year of his contract at the end of the season and could be available on a bargain price come summer. Speaing of the contract situation, Gaya said: “I say it with sincerity, it is a subject that I do not like to get involved and that is what my representatives are for. Now I am focused on the national team and on having a good year with Valencia.

“My representatives are the ones who lead the negotiation and they are the ones who they know what to do.”

At 26, Gaya is entering the peak years of his career and has volumes of experience at the highest level. He would be a fine long-term replacement for Alba at Barcelona. Whether they get their man next year remains to be seen.
